Vaccination & Health Entry Requirements

It’s important to consult with your healthcare provider at least 6–8 weeks before travel!

"The government of Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival if you are traveling from a country with risk of yellow fever."

Yellow Fever

Tanzania is classified as a low-risk country for yellow fever. However, the following rules apply:

  • Mandatory for travelers coming from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries for more than 12 hours.

  • Not required for direct travelers from non-endemic regions such as Europe and the United States.
  • The vaccine must be taken at least 10 days prior to travel and is valid for life.
  • If you cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, a doctor’s exemption letter may be accepted upon arrival.

Recommended Travel Vaccinations

It’s important to consult with your healthcare provider at least 6–8 weeks before travel. The following vaccinations are recommended:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (DPT) – Booster recommended every 10 years.

  • Hepatitis A & B – Due to potential exposure via food, water, or bodily fluids.

  • Polio, MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella), Chickenpox, Influenza, Shingles – These are often part of childhood vaccinations but ensure your coverage is current.

  • Typhoid – Transmitted through contaminated food and water.

  • Rabies – Recommended if you plan close contact with animals.

  • Meningococcal Meningitis – Advised for travelers participating in outdoor or crowded activities.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases & Prevention

Tanzania is a malaria-endemic country. While no vaccine is available, you can protect yourself by:

  • Taking malaria prophylaxis (consult your doctor for the best option).
  • Using insect repellent with DEET.
  • Wearing long-sleeved clothing in the evening and early morning.
  • Sleeping under mosquito nets, widely provided in lodges and hotels.

Although rare in Tanzania, it's mosquito-borne. Preventative measures are similar to malaria, especially in coastal or tropical zones.

Health & Safety Tips During Your Stay

Travel Insurance

  • Medical expenses (including emergency hospitalization).
  • Evacuation and repatriation.
  • Lost or damaged luggage.
  • Trip cancellation.

Be sure to verify your policy includes mountain rescue if you’re planning to hike Kilimanjaro.

For added protection, we recommend trip cancellation insurance to recover costs in case your plans change unexpectedly.
