Mt. Meru

About

Standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and a stunning counterpart to its famous neighbor, Kilimanjaro. This dormant volcano offers a unique and challenging trek, with its diverse landscapes ranging from lush rainforests to barren volcanic terrain. The mountain’s rugged beauty, highlighted by the impressive crater and cliffs, provides a breathtaking backdrop for hikers. Often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a favorite for those seeking a quieter, yet equally rewarding adventure. Located within Arusha National Park, it’s easily accessible from the city of Arusha and offers a rich blend of wildlife, including giraffes, buffaloes, and various bird species. The climb, while demanding, is non-technical, making it a perfect option for trekkers looking for a challenging and scenic alternative to Kilimanjaro.

Am I Fit to Climb Mount Meru?

Mount Meru is a stunning, challenging, and rewarding climb, but like Kilimanjaro, it requires determination, physical fitness, and mental preparation. While climbing Mount Meru is not as high as Kilimanjaro, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), it is still a significant physical challenge, particularly due to its steep terrain and altitude. The youngest person to summit Mount Meru was around 9 years old, and many people of varying fitness levels have made the climb. Success depends on your determination, pacing yourself, and avoiding rushing.

As with any high-altitude hike, physical fitness is important, but so is acclimatization. Make sure to take your time, walk steadily, and allow your body to adjust to the altitude to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. The climb typically takes around 3 to 4 days, so be prepared for a multi-day trek that will push you physically and mentally.

How Do I?

In Tanzania, local regulations require all climbers to be accompanied by a licensed guide. These guides, usually working with a team of porters, will ensure your safety, help with navigation, and take care of the heavy lifting, such as carrying luggage, food, and equipment. Porters are also responsible for setting up and dismantling camps, preparing meals, and ensuring everything is in order at your campsites.

It’s crucial to verify that your guide comes from a reputable organization. Choose companies that adhere to ethical practices, ensuring fair wages and good working conditions for porters. Ethical companies, like Tenebo Adventures, help promote sustainable tourism while enhancing the experience for climbers.

After Climbing Mount Meru

Many climbers choose to relax and unwind after summiting Mount Meru. A great way to celebrate your achievement is by exploring Arusha, the gateway to Mount Meru, with its vibrant restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. For those who enjoy wildlife, consider going on a safari to see Tanzania’s famous Big 5 in nearby parks like Serengeti, Tarangire, or Ngorongoro Crater. If you're looking for something more relaxing, a visit to the Kikuletwa Hot Springs near Arusha will help rejuvenate your muscles. Alternatively, you can treat yourself to a beach holiday in Zanzibar, where the stunning beaches and rich culture provide the perfect getaway.

Routine

Your day on Mount Meru will begin early, typically at 06:00, with a hearty breakfast before breaking camp. You will carry a packed lunch and start your trek for the day, stopping for breaks as necessary. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at the next campsite, where you can rest and enjoy a satisfying dinner. It’s important to bring a dry, comfortable set of clothes for your time inside the tent.

Keep in mind that Mount Meru has limited facilities, and there are no toilets or washing facilities on the mountain. Staying hydrated is essential, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, and don't forget to take frequent breaks to avoid overexertion.
